Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Runku is often left alone on accident, his parents not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. They never mean any harm and most likely don't even know that they have hurt Runku in any way, most likely because the little boy is just too quiet to speak up. How can Hyzoa and Hafai know that their son misses them and wants more time if he says absolutely nothing, ever. Even when he is with his friends Runku rarely says a word, only ever making a peep when directly asked. However, he becomes the most talkative when his mother takes him for a fly on her back, and when his father finally comes home after months out on the open ocean.
