Stone Dragons have a tough outer covering made of a stone-like material. They eat rocks, using the minerals they contain for nourishment and to keep up their stone outer shell. They rarely move, and are the heaviest of all types of dragons. Although they have wings, indicating flight ability, no one has ever seen a stone dragon flying.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Iana d'Lafayette is the tenth among her brethren in the Lafayette clan. Although she is a stone dragon, she is most peculiar because she can move faster than some of the others. Iana is one of the most competitive dragons that any of the Caretakers of this clan has ever experienced, and although she does not seem to enjoy it, she runs like the wind when there is a competitor. She is hostile toward those who can definitely outrun her, like Titia and Moriarty. It is rather amusing to witness a stone dragon that stomps across a grassy field, leaving huge footprints behind as it chases another swift-footed and agile dragon. Iana is sometimes very jealous and proud; as a hatchling she was a little rebel who was constantly in trouble because she would not stop harassing other younglings. Still, Iana is extremely loyal and faithful, and she is always willing to protect those around her. She was born on August 29, 1774, near Mt. St. Helens.
