Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Unlike the other hatchlings, this one hatched with wings.

And look! Its back legs have become a second set of wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Zek'enil had the misfortune of contracting a mysterious disease shortly before maturing that forced him to stay frozen as a hatchling. Despite this setback, he never displays a bitter attitude and manages to act quite mature. He enjoys flying and hardly ever lands, mainly because his hind legs have metamorphosed into wings and make for incredibly awkward movement. He is good with the other hatchlings and always feels a bit bittersweet when they mature. Other than that, the only thing that manages to get under his scales is when the matured dragons start poking fun at him--it's especially annoying when the dragons younger than him start doing it.
