Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Avanse tries to act mature and serious, but her true-childish nature often overcomes her when the cold comes around. It's hilarious to see her be so serious and mature, then a small snowdrift sweeps across the land, and she falls to pieces like an ice sculpture struck the wrong way. She gives a small, joyful scream, then runs outside and plunges her head into the snow. However, during the hot seasons, she keeps up her little grown-up act very well. She's often referred to as very different things depending on the time of year. During summer she's talked to like she's full-grown, and during winter, baby talk is the main language other dragons use with her.
