Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Monsieur is very cheesy. His feet positively REEK. Sadly, as he has to stay moist to survive, they never get the chance to dry out, so the stench gets worse with every passing day. Not for nothing is Roquefort known as stinky cheese. The other dragons hate it when he flies past, leaving a powerful whiff behind him. So he isn't exactly popular in the cave. But although occasionally he wonders if it would be better to lie in the sun and dry out to get rid of the odour, he knows that then he would harden and lose the ability to fly. So he just carries on regardless, and hopes no-one will actually eat him in a sandwich.
