Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It’s kind of shaky on its feet and enjoys playing in puddles.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Splutter never quite got the hang of swimming, so he's always forgetting how to breathe underwater. This tends to lead to him dashing madly back up to the surface for air, choking and coughing to a dreadful degree. The healers of the clan are worried about him, but the older water-dwelling dragons always say that he'll do fine eventually, he just needs time to get used to himself. Splutter never really ventures an opinion himself, since he's too busy trying to get some air.
