Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Though his true name is Raybel, Raybel is often called Failbel, or just Fail. The youngest of the black Bels, Raybel is chaotic and unpredictable, the traits that led to his freezing. He's tough for his size, but not that intelligent; he may be mentally handicapped. He dislikes his nickname, but has gotten used to it—it still annoys him to be called Fail, but he doesn't mind Failbel because it has the proper suffix.
