Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Top pupil at the exalted Draconic University of Arcelia, Rains has lived there for as long as he can remember, fostered and cherished by the scores of wizened and often well aged dragons who teach there. But questions regarding his arrival--questions he feels may lead to answers about his vision--often receive no answer beyond furtive side glances and weak coughs. Those who do tell him something tell him no more than that his mother and father were political leaders who died unexpectedly. But this raises more questions than are answered: who they were, how they died, why the university took him in.
