Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Ailments Kept is a sickly little hatchling, forever stunted in growth. Bitter and dejected, he spends almost all his time staring at the sky, flapping what little remnants of wings he has. None of the Ophidian Clan's whites have determined exactly what his sickness is, and even their combined magics were not enough to heal him permanently. As a last resort, the clan leader had Ether, the oldest Magi, freeze Ailments in order to prevent the stress of adolescence from killing him.

Though Ailments never mentions his desire to fly, every dragon knows about it. However, no one knows what to do about him. Even a Daydream's visions only lead to him becoming more depressed, as he knows the fantasies could never become reality.
