Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

LittleNoStripes is a Black Striped Dragon who has never matured. He is hundreds of years old, but he hasn't grown his stripes and wings. Everyone in his cave is mystified, even the Healers in the Clinic have no clue. LittleNoStripes is a happy hatchling, and he has grown mentally. He acts more like a very young adult dragon, rather than the just-hatched dragon he appears to be.
