Feisty and energetic, Whiptail Dragons pride themselves on their speed and agility. It is not unusual to see several whiptails racing each other. Though fragile, they can easily evade attacks with their superior speed, and often use their long tails as a weapon, giving rise to their name.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sami is a member of the ancient Long clan of dragons, the "Long" surname being a word meaning "Myth of an Immortal (ghostly residing on earth, not gone etc. spiritheart) Moon Prophecy", or "Flying creature" depending on how it is written, that is used in many civilizations of the eastern part of the world. The Long clan is said to have originated from the eastern part of the world, and could be any breed of dragon, as many dragons of the east travelled to the western, southern, and northern parts of the world after their nests had been destroyed by a ridiculously strong earthquake. Sami first heard of his lineage when he was an egg, his mother had muttered something about it before abandoning him, and unlike Seog, another member of the clan, he doesn't practice the original rituals and traditions set by the ancient members of the clan.
