Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Qhyn Redwinx is a frozen red dragon. She is very calm and slightly impatient, and she often calls herself a 'queen'. When she hatched, her body temperature was abnormally high, even for a red dragon. As she matured, her hyperthermia didn't get any better, and she was so hot that touching her scales would burn a dragon. As a result, Merlin's Spirit, a magi dragon, joked that freezing her would prevent the heat from damaging her body. But Qhyn Redwinx thought that he meant it literally, and begged him to do it. By the time she realized that freezing stopped age and not heat, it was too late. However, since then, her condition has gotten better, and while she wants to know how it's like to grow up and have children, she really doesn't regret being able to doze off all day in the hatchery and not having to hunt for her clan or follow any orders (especially since she's a 'queen'!)
