Sunstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Amashik is a dragon that was raised outside her clan. Leafspeckle, her Terrae father, bred with Zodias to create Amashik's egg. With great fear of the egg, Leafspeckle tossed it far out into the wilderness where eggs are never taken. As the egg hit the last day of its life, an old shaman appeared and took the egg home with him. when the egg hatched, he called it "Amashik" and taught it all he knew about surviving. Amashik eventually grew up as a dragon who helped her raiser hunt. Back then, she was unaware of what she was. Her years with the shaman ended when her dragon blood awakened her and convinced her to move on. When Amashik left, she found a clan of dragons called the Uncita clan. She was accepted and let in the clan. Because of her previous life, Amashik is quite gentle with humans and will act friendlier to them rather than other dragons.
