Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Originally, the egg is stolen from a nest in Volcanic Region in order to make a coat-of-arms for the newly-appointed prince of nearby kingdom from the tail-shield: it is said that ones obtained from a Guardian Dragon would be able to defend against almost anything, save from a certain dragon's fang. Alas, the Dragonsage-in-training took the wrong egg: one that has already matured at an alarming rate, perhaps due to sensing danger to its well-being.

Upon being presented before the prince, the egg hatched-or rather, exploded from the struggle made by the hatchling.  The dragon spoke and told the prince that if he wanted a shield, she will become his; her scales, shell, horn and fangs-will become the one repelling dangers from the prince's kin. She determined that she would do this if he would not kill innocents for his own sake.

Thus, the hatchling is christened 'Este Shielda','The Protectress' in ancient Shympatean-and since then continued to protect the kingdom from any threats, be it attacks from the another kingdom or revolt within.
