Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

After a history of family conflict, Paxaquod Nix refuses to acknowledge his Dorkface connections, eschewing the perks associated with his illustrious ancestry. Lanky and underfed, he survives largely through magic, and has cultivated a sardonic humor that would keep most of his peers at wing's length if, in fact, he had wings. Though scoffed at by most of his cousins, he does attract the occasional champion, and is happier with these genuine friendships than he ever would have been with the fickle attention of his ostensibly civilized clan.
