Ridgewing Dragons live just below the snow level on the upper slopes of mountains. They are a friendly, playful breed and enjoy dancing in wind currents near their homes or plummeting down into valleys from great heights. Their wings, by far their most striking feature, grow in fin-like ridges along their backs. While their bodies lack markings to blend better with their surroundings, a ridgewing’s wings have bright markings in the colors of the flowers that grow in their mountain habitat. Occasionally different-colored individuals can be found, but they are rare because their striking coloring offers little protection.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

The human girl named Flight discovered Coalus' egg while hiking to the tallest Mountain of Elgar to visit her friend and fellow dragon caretaker, Ember Nuria. Flight brought the egg back to her home in a cave near the Lake of Elgar. Once hatched, Coalus wasted no time in taking to the sky, being a natural for finding perfect air currents to glide on. As a maturing hatchling, she spent much of her time flying above her siblings (other dragon hatchlings that Flight cared for) and took the role as older sister, often chided them for being too reckless. Coalus spent most of her time with her sister, the Moonstone dragon named Eldari of the Lunar Light, and when Flight allowed her, the Swallowtail dragon named Celadonia Nuria, a dragon companion to Ember Nuria. As an adult, Coalus made the decision to leave the Lake of Elgar and live above in the tallest Mountain of Elgar, higher than even Ember Nuria's home. There she still remains, flying to her hearts content.
