It was previously believed that purple dragons were exclusively female, but this is not the case. Recent environmental shifts have revealed the existence of both genders of this breed. Female behavior is well known; they are primarily herbivores but will eat meat during mating season. On the other hand, very little is known about the behavior and habits of male purple dragons.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

As an egg Ouranos was found by the girl, Flight, and cared for in her cave by the Lake of Elgar within the Mountains of Elgar. Just before he hatched, Ouranos' "brother" (a Gray dragon named Erebus who was also raised by Flight) disappeared while exploring near the Western Sea. Though frantic about Erebus, Flight focused on Ouranos, journeying back to her cave so the hatchling would be safe. After several months, Ouranos grew and matured quickly. Serious and watchful, the young Purple dragon was like a father figure to his two littermates. Then came the day when Erebus appeared, fully matured and much larger than Flight. Sharing that he had joined forces with the Stone dragon named Tartarus and that the two would create a High Family to rule Elgar, Erebus threw Flight aside and snatched Ouranos and his two littermates, taking them away. Despite the rough transition, Ouranos stayed with the High Family, believing that they can bring the Mountains of Elgar under a single, peaceful rule.
