Sunstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Blazing Opal is a member of the Sunstone harem, and the oldest of all the females. As such, she's sort of the mother to the rest, and usually the other females respect her wisdom and experience enough to not pick fights with her. She's named after her favorite food in the whole wide world, opals, and in her nesting area she has a great pool of running water to keep her opals in, since they'll dry out and be ruined if exposed to the air for too long. Everyone agrees that because of this she has the most beautiful nest in the harem, simply because of that reflecting pool filled with gleaming opals in green, orange, gold, blue, and every other color imaginable. But the best piece of all, and one that she's deemed too beautiful to ever eat, is a fire opal the size of her own head! Marvelous Topaz presented it to her when asking to become her mate.
