Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Itty Bitty inherited her mother's talent for talking rapidly, rendering even the dragons most versed in hatchling-babble speechless. The only two dragons that can understand her are her mother and Slumber, who was the only one who could understand her mother. She will corner her father and chatter endlessly at him as he stares at her astounded, totally clueless as to what she's trying to say to him. This drives her to go to her mother or Slumber for translation, which strengthens their bonds.
