Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

How ironic it was, for an Ice dragon to be frozen. Yet that is exactly what this hatchling became the moment it entered the territory of a family intolerant of strangers. Deep within the Highlands of Alba lives a group of Winter and Ice dragons; cold-hearted and haughty, they mix only with their own kind, believing in the superiority of their races. Although an Ice dragon itself, Otha descended from various dragon breeds. It did not take long for the Winters and Ices to realise what it was. What it had. Dirty blood. Sgian Deigh felt no sympathy for the youngster when he cast a spell over Otha which froze the hatchling to its very bones, preventing it from ever maturing and continuing its impure lineage.

Too young to fend for itself, Otha had no choice but to stay in this unloving family. In return for a few scraps of food, its job is to convince each new dragon welcomed into the family to choose only a mate of a pure Ice and Winter parentage; and if they don't, to tell Sgian Deigh.
