Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Amoung the first dragons to arrive on Thundercrest, Recicanta is the eldest dragon upon the island. She is the only elder of Thundercrest Island who can only ever remember being there, as she hatched on the island by herself. A mudslide in the jungle had swept her egg into the river, where she was carried out to sea and deposited onto the beach of Thundercrest Island, and hatched after being warmed by sun and sand.

Recicanta herself is a kind and patient dragon who loves to bake and play with the hatchlings. She is wise and is often sought out as a peacemaker and third party in arguments because of her highly regarded neutrality. She makes it her duty to be involved with each hatchling and make sure they all grow up peacefully and have a happy hatchlinghood. Frewvix visits her regularly to bake with her, to the point where they consider their relationship like a mother and child. Her closest friends, however will always be Milikiti, Veintuna and Malkorius, the other elders.
