Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Silve is the fourth of six children, his mother passing away from the stress of bearing so many offspring. His father, distraught, disappeared, leaving them on their own. Only poor Silve made it to the orphanage, the rest having succumbed to malnourishment, disease, or violence. He's rather sullen, staying to himself and not talking much, just playing with random sticks and stones on the ground. The other orphans leave him alone as well, as he sometimes gets angry when approached. Only Lucius attempts to approach him, believing that he can eventually channel his emotions into defense and become a great soldier.
