Coastal Waverunners spend most of their time skimming the waves along the coast, snatching up their prey from the shallow waters. They have developed markings along the leading edges of their body that help disguise them as breaking waves. When they are not hunting, they enjoy playing among sand-dunes and shallow tide-pools. These dragons live in small but noisy rookeries. Some stories say Waverunners can fly for days on end without landing.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Tekomi, or the proper way to comprehend his name, Sergeant Tekomi, is the strongest Waverunner in the clan. He has the blood of purebred wild Waverunners in him and inhales it with pride. His story of becoming a Sergeant began when he was only thirty years old, and he was sitting by the shoreline. He was then suddenly irrupted by another Waverunner much elder than Tekomi was. At first glance it seemed as if the elder Waverunner was alone, but when Tekomi tried to escape he got attacked by several other elder Waverunners. Their leader, Sergeant Daioyld, caught the unwanted dragon (Tekomi) in his territory. Enraged, he sent his flock against Tekomi. Tekomi's strength grew tense as the Waverunners leaped upon him, and he pushed them away. Tekomi quickly charged at Daioyld, avoiding the deadly snaps of the flock. With one bounce, the Sargent bellowed and charged back. Tekomi became the luckiest and caught Daioyld by the life-pumping vein in his neck. Killed, Tekomi became the Sergeant.
