Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Light Speed was the second of Crystal's frozen hatchlings. For a long while it and Little Nessy were the only frozen hatchies in the cave, and the two didn't get along very well, so they sought other company. Light Speed was much more successful than the resentful Deep Sea dragon. He was very popular among the adult dragons, most of whom were friends with the bright and athletic hatching from their childhood. Now, however, more and more hatchlings are being granted eternal youth, and it's falling back on the popularity scale, and if there's one thing it hates it's being ignored. Even though it has never had a gender, it stubbornly calls itself a male.
