Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Praising Heaven of Saffron King is a member of the Gray Tower's hunting party, who's job is to bring back the meat necessary to feed the many Dragons that call the tower home. He and his mate, Treasuring Moon of Azure Queen, lead the day hunt, but will join in the night hunt when they feel like it. Saffron's fin is unusual in that while not noticeable from afar, a small black-striped pattern adorns it diagonally.

He is also a well liked Dragon within the Tower, by both the other Dragons and the servants. Some think this is why Anora picked their children for her Vampire experiment. While he was not to pleased with the idea, his loyalty to the Gray Lady lead to his acceptance of it in the end.
