Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Gloriously golden, Epica was born to a palatial life, wanting for nothing. Loving the wind, she flew often, and was praised for her prowess in the air. One day, the air wind went from friend to foe, and Epica was caught in a late spring storm. Struggling to stay aloft and not be dashed on the rocks below, it was then that Epica saw the Thunder and Storm dragons. While her large, heavy, golden body was laboring to stay aloft, several dozen of those mighty fliers were dancing with the wind, waltzing with the rain, courting the thunder and taunting the lightning. Distracted by their dancing, she was caught in a sudden downdraft. Screaming, she plummeted to the rocks below, only to be saved by some late arrivals to the dance. Set gently on the cold ground, the fliers went aloft again. She watched them, mesmerized, until the storm passed. Ever after, she cursed her hated golden form, that she would never be able to waltz with the wind, not as they had.
