Gold-horned Tangars are a brightly colored tropical breed. They are primarily herbivores, and eat a wide variety of fruits and flowers in addition to the occasional bird. Tangars are well suited to life in the trees; their slender bodies make them light enough to be supported by thinner branches and agile enough to avoid obstacles while flying. Their brightly colored horns, found in both males and females, are used to attract mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Flight, the human girl living within the Mountains of Elgar and one of two Dragon Guardians in the area, discovered Malachite of the Gems' egg while exploring with the Terrae dragon, Horvn, in Tohrutyr, the largest and brightest out of the three forests in the Mountains of Elgar (the other two being Aeterna Nocte and Erdi). Malachite was and still is a handful for the rest of her siblings, all dragons raised by Flight. Her saucy tongue and arrogant nature gets her on the wrong side of all, with the elder dragons flicking their tails irritably and the younger dragons running away at the sight of her. Even Flight gets exasperated with Malachite's constant attitude. Yet despite it all, Malachite has found a crush among the dragons of Elgar, her younger "brother" the kind-hearted, soft-spoken Vopentr. Slowly, miraculously, Malachite has allowed Vopentr to enter her heart and the two are now mates and live together in Tohrutyr.
