Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Due to surviving a powerful beam of magic as a hatchling, Golrin's physical growth has been stunted, but his magical growth has become rapid. As an egg, he was adopted by a group of ancient Magis to be raised as an apprentice in their magic kingdom. The Magi hatchlings in the nursery were playing with their magic one day. They began conjuring their magic together into a large beam. Young Magi dragons have poor magic skill and lost control of the beam, causing Golrin to be hit by it. Golrin wasn't killed, but his body had absorbed the entire beam. To this day he's still the same size he was when he got hit, but his magic is very powerful. He is very useful in the kingdom because of his abundant power.
