Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

DON'T EAT ME is freaked out about getting eaten. He had seen cheese dragons in the wild that were not able to defend themselves from pecking birds. He remembers seeing the remains of the dragon crumble to the ground as it yelped in pain and terror. After seeing such a disturbing scene, DON'T EAT ME yaps at others as they go as far as to sniff him. Everyone would mutter, "What a freak," but they haven't witnessed or heard about the wild cheese dragons getting eaten.
