Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Everything about Puff is poofy- his fluffy midnight-blue mane, the tufts of fur along his hooves, the fine dust clouds he kicks up when he runs- even the clouds in the sky look fluffier when he flies among them. Despite this, he resents being referred to as "poofy". He insists that the name Puff came not from his, well, puffiness, but from a heroic dragon with a similar name, who he had heard about in stories told by other dragons. Puff is a very fast runner who pushes himself to run a little bit faster or farther each day, not letting his poofs hold him back.
