Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys playing in shallow water.

And look! It has grown fins, and likes to make bubbles in the water. It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Icall is a small, hyperactive hatchling. Looking at him, it is hard to imagine that he might have had bad things happen to him. But when he was younger, he was very badly injured from a tree falling on him. It was decided that the only way to stop him losing the use of one of his legs was to freeze him, and so the Magis were ordered to do so. Even frozen, it took him a long time to recover, but now he is able to bounce along as happily as ever. There are moments, however, when one can see the serious, sad hatchling that thought it would never be able to walk properly again shining through.
