Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon... except for the tangle of dangerous-looking vines surrounding it...

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Last Dying Rose of Summer is one of Phoenix's dragons. He is a nasty, mean little hatchling that loves to see others trip over their own feet, or otherwise hurt themselves in some way. He is not loved much among the other hatchlings and he keeps to himself -- to Phoenix's frustration, he holes up in her garden and habitually kills her plants -- avoiding any sort of socializing and only watching the clumsy young dragons in hopes of finding some cruel amusement.

Summer is not quite brave enough to elicit pranks or cause general havoc, as he has, in his observant nature, noted how the elders deal with misbehaving hatchlings; he prefers to be a bystander and watch as things spiral downhill, or to fail to step in when he sees trouble ahead. Many of the elders, and Phoenix herself, fear that this may change if he gains any in size.
