Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

As a Black Dragon hatched with pale eyes more fit for an Albino, Briyn has faced ridicule for a very long time. Her own family abandoned her, and it was not until the dragon-protecting Draikenflaeme clan came upon her extremely emaciated self that she truly had any company.

During a rough winter, Briyn met an Aegis Dragon named Renegade. As he swore to offer her warmth and protection in the harsh cold, she fell in love with the giant. But as winter came to an end, she awoke one morning to Renegade gone, abandoning her as so many had before and leaving her with nothing but a yet unlaid egg.

Briyn swore to never abandon the hatchling. She named her son Briar, and, despite never truly seeing him, decreed him beautiful. Today he is careful in helping out the Draikenflaemes, never wanting to leave his mother alone. It seemed an unending pattern before last winter, when Renegade decided to return to the dragoness he called his "true love" and the son he never even knew of.
