And look! It has grown wings and its scales have gained beautiful patterns. It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.
Born with blue wings in a family of red wings, this female often pouts about her looks, wishing only to match her mommy in appearance. Her mother assures her that it's alright and that blue is a lovely color, while her father mutters under his breath that maybe if she'd wanted red wings she should've stared at an appropriately colored nebula instead of a gawking at a blue one for years (this usually results in mommy slapping daddy for reasons baby doesn't understand).
