Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Renko is a very clever Black dragon who studies magic. He's read up on the innate abilities of every breed of dragon, and is most fascinated by the ethereal Shadow Walkers. Once, as he was traveling in search of more books, he came across a small clan of dragons, all utterly normal except for the stunningly beautiful silvery-violet female, Maribel Hearn. Renko fell in love with her almost immediately, though as he grew closer to her, he realized that Maribel was in fact a Shadow Walker, utterly ignorant of her own powers and terrified that she's losing her grasp on reality. He struggles daily with whether he should help her realize her powers and gain control of them, as he knows it would aid her peace of mind, but if she slips away between realities, he can't follow her.
