Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. The Scarlet Dorsal is a purple dorsal dragon, despite his name. He is quite intelligent and witty, and he is also very popular among his clan. A romantic sort of dragon, he is very charming and attractive, traits that he inherited from his valentine dragon ancestors. His fins are tinted the slightest shade of red, since he is the descendant of red dorsal dragons. The Scarlet Dorsal is also slightly paranoid and immature, and is quick to jump to conclusions, which resulted in the end of several disastrous relationships with mates. However, he makes up for this by being extremely charming and polite, and despite the repeated warnings, some females just can't resist falling into love with him.
