And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Gourd likes to hide between the giant pumpkins in a patch nearby to the cave in early autumn. This makes it very difficult for his tamer to find him, because he blends in nearly perfectly. The only thing that gives him away are his bright green eyes, which tend to flash before he jumps behind the next pumpkin. Gourd's personality is both mischievous and very sweet; he loves to snuggle up next to his tamer on a cold night.
