Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

SD was the fourth female Ochredrake Horsie found. Like GA and Eo, she was frozen as a hatchie. SD's story is a bit different, though. SD was a very strange hatchie. She would play with other hatchies, listen to the adult dragons tell stories to them, and act normally in every way except one: she never uttered so much as a peep. It wasn't that she couldn't. She didn't want to. She was afraid that with the power of speech, she could hurt others. She'd witnessed several other dragons verbally abusing others with their words, and she didn't want to ever do such a thing. But she didn't trust herself to control her words. Horsie, when SD confessed this to her by means of telepathy, tried to convince her that it was fine to talk, but SD was determined that she should lose her voice, lest she misuse it. She was so adamant on this point that Horsie had no other choice. However, the only way she could do this included freezing SD. SD decided it was worth it, and so she is a voiceless hatchie.
