Rift Wyrms are dragons adapted to both the frigid depths of the sea and the void that exists in the space between spaces. They have the ability to rip holes in the fabric of space that lead into and out of the void, and can manipulate the size and location of these rifts with additional effort. Their bodies give off an unsettling chill, while their mouths tend to glow from the mana they’ve consumed. Between their appearance and their method of travel, Rift Wyrms have a reputation as eldritch creatures that do not belong in this world. They tend to have a mischievous streak facilitated by their abilities. This ranges by individual from harmless japery to active malevolence, and many people and dragons are wary of them. Despite their reputation as tricksters, these wyrms are curious and may choose to help others on a whim just as often as they decide to harm.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Kyukeino never thought much of hunting for his own food, and as a hatchling would always be popping in and out of the caves of his family members during mealtimes, demanding a share of whatever they happened to be eating at the moment. Usually there's enough to go around so this isn't much of an issue, though one time one of his younger siblings tried to play a prank on Kyu simply bringing him a pile of shellfish with the shells still on. Kyu took the food and later opened up a rift over his little sister's head, through which he dumped the remains of the half-chewed shell pieces from his dinner. Ever since then the family has figured out that if they're going to give him food anyway, they can use it to bribe Kyu to carry messages and packages between family homes. Some of his siblings even keep a stash of his favorite seafood on hand, since Kyu tends to be more willing to play deliveryboy if he knows there's a treat waiting for him at the destination.
