Cassare Dragons are known for their magic-deadening abilities. Though not a conscious ability, a large field surrounds the dragon through which magic is passively nullified. This field is strongest near the dragon itself, and falls off with distance. The absence of magic often makes other creatures avoid them, though some will have the opposite reaction and seek refuge instead. It has also caused them to be hunted, as though the field is severely weakened once dead, their bones and scales retain some of the effect. Possessing such an item is considered a necessity by those who expect to face hostile magic.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Iocrette Siicho is the Grand Mistress of the Order of the Cassare of the Java Tiger Clan. She is a firm believer in the ideals of the Order, which holds that magic is dangerous and that it must be limited and controlled at all costs. This belief has always existed among Cassare, possibly as they are unable to use it themselves. Among the Cassare of the Java Tiger Clan, though, it has nearly become a religious imperative. Io, as she likes to be called, is always trying to learn to control her magic deadening ability, though so far she has always and invariably failed to get any conscious control, and putting forward ideas for new laws concerning magic before the court and, of course, constantly getting into arguments on the subject with members of the Order of Magi. The dragoness's heart is in the right place, though, and she is actually genuinely concerned over the fate of her Clan and, indeed, dragon kind as a whole if some dragon of evil intentions should learn the secrets of magic.
