Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. This hatchling is hard to see, but in the sunlight it displays brilliant colors.

And look! Its wings have grown large enough that it can now fly. It hardly ever leaves the air now.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Hekigan's name means "blue eyes."  The sunset dragon hatchling, Hinoiri, stumbled upon her completely by accident.  He was foraging for shellfish among the submerged rocks on the shore, and literally tripped over her as she lay in hiding in the shadow of a large piece of driftwood.  In a moment of surprise, she opened the piercingly blue eyes which are her namesake.  The two locked gazes for several heartbeats as she paused in pre-launch position.  Then she offered him the coyest of smiles and she darted up into the sky, briefly illuminated by the dying sun's rays before she disappeared.  Hino has since tried to rediscover her, not knowing that it is actually she who stalks him.
