Gold dragons are the ones most often killed by humans, who consider their scales to be extremely valuable. These golden scales grant them a high level of protection, similar to armor, and they use this to their advantage in battle.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

They hunted her as if she was a beast. Scrambling away from her sibling's corpse in tears, the tangles of thorns ripping and scratching the scales for which they would kill her, she ran until she could run no longer. Stumbling on to the barren side of a long dead volcano, she turned to battle to the last, hissing in her shaking young voice--only to start as a far deeper roar came from behind her, a handful of adult ember dragons surging forward, chasing off her hunters.

Embers are not known for being sociable beasts, and so why they took her in, few could tell. But take her in they did, until long years had formed an unbreakable bond. An adult now, wise and strong, the embers of the old wounds still flicker in this dragon's heart--and ever more often does she look at the human villages below, smiling softly, planning her revenge.
