Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nyctiphlox is known as the Night-Fire. Fond of fire spells and nocturnal ambushes, Nyct has a mixed reputation even among other black dragons. Though combat prowess is always respected among their breed, many claim to sense something 'off' about Nyct, something dark and strange. Any black dragon is dark and strange by human standards, of course, but these individuals speak by their own standards. So despite his ability, he is rarely invited to the most prestigious hunts or patrols; only to those battles where his particular skills would be too useful to pass up. For his part, he seems to ignore all the sidelong glances and muttered rumors. He is always busy with something, whether perfecting a new incineration spell or building sculptures out of the charred bones of defeated enemies. These are normal activities for his kind, but he manages to creep everyone out regardless. He has female fans, and many offspring, but isn't much of a father, and doesn't raise them at all.
