Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Shy and kind-hearted, Shimmerdown uses her natural glow to serve as a night-light for frightened young hatchlings; she will curl up with the most timid group in the cave, her soft aura helping to lull them into sleep. She loves to chase after butterflies, although she would never actually catch them, and enjoys creating sand sculptures on the beach. She is very close to her mother and father, and cannot sleep peacefully if they do not tell her a bedtime story. She also is very close to her brother Mark, and assists him in freeing animals from the traps of hunters.
