Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

As a young hatchling, Cherub was sent out into the wilderness to make a dragon tamer very happy. He was told that young silver dragons were rare, and that it was a great honor to raise one. Cherub didn't understand why he was being taken from his parents, and was scared to suddenly have to depend on someone new, but this idea of making someone very happy excited him. However... he was never able to overcome his fear of meeting a new 'parent'. Shortly after abandonment, he gained his mane and the ability to fly, and used this ability to avoid any new dragon tamers. Hindered by his fear but spurred on by excitement, Cherub has become a young nomad, visiting human and dragon settlements to find just the right tamer. He's recently taken a liking to Mlagern's dragon clan and the nearby groups, usually returning there before and after going out on long journeys. They all know that one day he will grow up and settle there, but for now they're all just content to hear his stories and songs.
