When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Alex can be moody and tends to brood when things go wrong, but he has a heart of gold and will not stay angry or sad for long if his friends are worried for him. Despite the fact that he is a water dragon, he seems to be wary in the medium that which he dwells, and he doesn't like to go under for very long. A spiteful dragon had held his head under the water, preventing him from surfacing to breathe, and has scarred him deeply. He prefers to hunt small fish that skim the surface of the water and occasionally snap up a small mammal or two that venture too close to the water's edge. His best friend and beloved mate is Elle Holloway, and the two are nearly inseparable.
