Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has two heads and growls at you occasionally.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

This hatchling uses her hookclaws to clamber up cacti. She likes to perch atop them while watching for lizards. When she sees an unsuspecting lizard, she dives from her perch to kill it for her meal.

Sometimes she gets cactus spines in her claws. When this happens, she gets very grumpy and is more apt to use the diving technique to steal prey from smaller creatures instead of hunting for herself.
