And look! It has grown larger fins! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.
This dragon is just one example of the damage that can be caused by lies and fools. This creature's father died shortly after her egg was laid, defending his mate and the weaker dragons that share their territory. Her brother then took over the task of helping his mother to raise the child... but the neighboring dragons were not thankful for the sacrifice of the father. Rather, jealous of the family's weakness, they spread rumors that the female was the daughter of the mother and son. The two elders ignored this, but the hatchling became estranged from so many years of being called filth, an impurity. She fled the nest, and now lives in bitter hatred of all other beings, believing herself a monster and behaving like one, fulfilling the lie.
