This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

When Tinerri was a hatchling he stopped aging, and eating, and drinking. His scales turned dark and his front teeth grew longer and sharper. Out of fear his parents ran away from him, leaving him to take care of himself. He wandered around the mountain side for a long time, growing weaker and weaker with no explanation as to why. Eventually, he curled up in a cave, crying and waiting for his body to finally give out. That was when a female dragon found him, but she was strange. She had long fangs, and had very pale scales. She quickly left again and returned with a small animal, giving Tinerri the blood and nursing him back to health. She explained to him what he was. She continued to teach him and look after him, becoming a surrogate mother to him. Soon he forgot about his parents abandoning him and his near death experience. He stuck by his new mother's side, becoming as happy and energetic as any other hatchling, despite his Vampiric nature.
