And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Winter Forever has been enamored with her reflection ever since she took her first drink of water from the spring-fed pool in the back of the cave. She became convinced that there was no hatchling as beautiful as herself and would spend hours preening at the edge of the pool. When she grew wings she was alarmed, fearing her beauty would fade as she became an adult. Frantic, Winter left home, seeking the magi dragoness Crocoitia so she could beg to be frozen, preserving her beauty forever. After she was frozen Crocoitia's mate, Wulfenite, convinced Winter to move in with the horde of frozen hatchlings by giving the winter hatchling a mirror on a thong, which she wears around her neck and stares at constantly. With her mirror, and plenty of food provided by the other dragons, Winter is a content little hatchling, forever in love with herself.
